Down in Victoria Park, it’s estimated 40,000+ people showed up to mark the 17th anniversary of the killings in Tiananmen Square last year.
I didn’t manage to show up this year, but went last year to see what was going on. I remembered it was quite peaceful and as most people were carrying lighted candles, it looked beautiful to watch.
I was interested to read that in the weeks after news filtered through of the event in 1989, one million people took to the streets of Hong Kong in protest – the largest civil demonstration ever seen in the city with roughly one in six of the population joining the protest!
