PS3 cheaper in HK, but Wii is double priced!

Long time no post sorry, but now I’m starting with a comment about the console wars and the lack of publicity they are receiving over here in Hong Kong.I’m surprised there was hardly a peep out of the local media about the launch of the US version of the Sony PS3 which retails over here at a price of $899 USD, considerably less than in the US.

I was even more surprised to find that if I wanted to buy a Japanese version of the Nintendo Wii then it will cost $439 USD which is nearly double the standard retail price, according to Hong Kong based retailer Yes Asia! (See Link)

It’s been funny reading customer comments on the Yes Asia site which range from:

“…I think this site need to be referred to BBB of the US or even better to US Attorney office or IRS for audit.”

“seriously, is that a typo or what? 459 dollars?? That’s almost TWO Wii, this has to be an error or something…”

It’s a bit of a pain using these consoles over here. The power plugs use British standard, but the consoles and games we can only get here are either Japanese or US versions which require a special power outage among other things. I’m more interested in the Wii, seems the games are far more interesting and like the way you can still use Gamecube titles.

So how to get a Cheap Wii in Hong Kong?

If anyone’s in the same situation as me, you can try the following retailers and get your hands on a British version which can be send to you:

Woolworths

There’s been a lot of hype about making pre-orders and getting in time for Xmas. It seems Woolworths are still taking orders and whilst they don’t deliver internationally, they can be seen as a last resort if you know someone in the UK who can send it on to you, if you’ve got itchy fingers and can’t wait.

Game

The version they only sell is a white Wii Console with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, however the good news is they deliver internationally and it’s cheap to send.

Amazon.co.uk

The pre-orders sold out in a matter of minutes a few days ago, but that still doesn’t mean they won’t get more in stock and they ship to Hong Kong. I think Amazon is your best bet if you want a Wii Console in time for Xmas!

found your blog randomly. Im in the UK, my little brother is in HK for a few months. Was trying to find out how much wii’s are over there so I could ask him to get one. But the cost more? No way!

Wii costs about $200 us dollar here but people were paying up to $1600 for a Ps3 las time I checked. I think its died down to $1100 now.

I am here now for work (april 28 2007) they are still between 2,000 and 3000 hk dollars, just for the console and one remote - not even a nunchuck!

    Hi,
Do you know if I brought a Wii in the UK would it work in Hong Kong?

Also would I be able to buy games that would work with a UK wii in Hong Kong?

    Thanks for your help

Yes your Wii would work in Hong Kong, same plug type etc.,

I think the problem is the games in Hong Kong. Most games are Japanese but in English language, so can be a problem with conversion…however some games are region free - is best to check on the game box to be sure…

    Hi
I’m trying to get my boyfriend a Wii for xmas, and am going out to HKG in December. Is it likely I’ll be able to get one over there, as I dont want to wait, and then not be able to get one in the UK. Also how much are they retailing for at the moment?

I just had a look today at Sham Shui Po.

Japanese Wii’s plus WiiKey chips are going for about HK $2700, but for me its kind of important to be able to read the Wii Menu so thata means I need a US Wii - the best price I could find for a US Wii was HK $3550 which also includes WiiKey.

Gonna look around a few more places before I buy though.
