How to Promote and Develop your Blog (Updated)

I thought these tips might be handy to new bloggers but also to seasoned bloggers who want to promote themselves better. The links below will not only improve your page ranking on sites such as Yahoo and Google, but offer tips from domain hosting to making money from your site.

Creating a Well Designed Site
Search Engines such as Google actively “spider” well designed sites better than non-conformant HTML sites. What I mean by “well designed” sites are sites which conform to W3C code and are rich with content. Websites which are heavy on graphics, multimedia (flash etc.,), split into frames and a long time to load will not be indexed by the spiders as well.

Hosting and Domain Names
Being hosted on geocities or blogger etc., is fun but doesn’t help your promotion. If you get your own domain name (which can cost less than $8 USD) then it’ll help when registering your site with others and search engines.

Using RSS to your Advantage
If you create an RSS file, I’d recommend submitting it to the following:

Promoting your site
There’s many ways to promote your blog - by cold calling, newsletters, adding email signatures, reciprocal linking with other bloggers but one of the most effective ways to get your site added to Search Engines and Weblog Sites.

I’d recommend submitting your sites to the following -

Making money from your Blog
Sharing your views with others is great, but what if you could make a bit of money from your site? The first place I’d go to is Google Adsense. Depending on the number of visitors you get to your site and level of click-thru’s that you are getting, you could end up making quite a bit of money from your site. I’ve also listed other recommended money making tools also:

Registering expired domains is not a good way to get traffic. Google resets the pagerank of any domain where ownership has changed, and the Open Directory Project (who provide data to Yahoo, Google and many others) remove domains that are about to expire.

By the way, you’ve got 300+ validation errors on that page and the site doesn’t render properly in Mozilla.

Neil, didn’t know if you enjoyed the article or not…

Registered domains are a useful way of getting traffic or getting an idea of knowing what Domain to use.

    Hey Giles,

Good article… Neil is right about the registering expired domains. They can have penalties and google has been putting timestamps on inbound links, so I’d say, avoid them for those reasons.

The good part is that a lot of good domains are now available. :)

Hey Giles, you’ve not updated your blog in awhile. What gives? Shouldn’t there be more blogging activity given it’s typhoon season and all? Miss them crazy pics. I took one when I was in HK…it was called the Willy Convenient Store. It must’ve been Really convenient….
