Hong Kongers = Arseholes?

Looking at recent articles by bloggers in HK, there seems to be the conclusion that most native Hong Kong people and expatriates who live here are rude, obnoxious and tight?

So what makes people living in HK any different to those living in other countries? Is it the hectic lifestyle of working long hours, for little money (not for expatriates) and living in cramped conditions? Perhaps it’s somehow linked to the fluctuating weather, where HK can have humid conditions one moment and blazing typhoons the next.

Well for expats, I’m of the opinion that some lack social skills which may account for why they were expatriated in the first place! You need a certain level of education and intelligence to be an expatriate in Hong Kong, this doesn’t mean however that you are the most friendly guy/gal in the world. Then you have the expats who are just obnoxious using their wealth and class to look down on others, something which is frowned upon back in their home countries.

The environment that we live in is hectic and the society is one where people just want to make money and fast. Perhaps this is could effect a person’s social skills?

I’ve met more of my fair share of arseholes and also thru the medium of blogging (Conrad, George, Dave…) but this is what gives HK character and with out them, everyday life would be just plain boring…

On a similar subject has anyone noticed the logo on the local bus? It says FirstTv but the way it’s been designed it looks more like “ArseTv”. Perhaps this could be subliminally effecting HK people? I thought it was funny anyway.

What I find annoying is that sometimes local people take expatriates as complete representatives of their country. A high proportion of these expats are people I normally wouldn’t hang out with normally in the UK.

Slightly off track, I have a Singaporean female friend who could be classified as an SPG. She went to study in England, thinking she was going to be in heaven based on what she had seen in SG of Brits. Needless to say, it was an eye opener for her. When she told me, I explained that not all Brits are the same. Duh.

Well, I went to UK for studies since 16, but I never feel that there is any difference for me after all those years. I am still a HKer, but I learn what HKers usually miss as what mentioned in the attached link article. HKers are generally not polite, and being selfish expecially in public. HKers will never consider the needs of letting pregnant woman and the old people for seat. Anyone gets on the train must rush to get what they want immediatley, never consider about others, no matter what environment they are in. Well, there are also many positive attitudes about HKers but usually the social behaviour make tourists of other countries “IMPRESSED”………well…what can I say? HK people will only want to earn money as fast as they can. They/we need some extra training on our perception and thinking apart from money earning. :P

I’d like to add my say: I find Hong Kong people to be completely sincere. While my Hong Kong University guidebook says something to the effect that one should not expect Hong Kongers to be friendly and open with you upon first meeting, I have found that the longer you stay with them and offer a genuine friendship the more any Hong Konger seems like anybody else in the world.

Out to live the best they can under the circumstances and in need of a good friend when times call for it.

Perhaps it depends also on where you work and live?

I went to Tung Chung today, the most relaxing place I’ve been to during my stay in HK- felt all my stresses disappear.

However on passing through central, I could feel all the negetive frantic energy around me which got me in that state also.
