Hong Kong Stinks

Lovely little article from Yahoo that explains Hong Kong pollution is worsening, adding to health problems and effecting tourism.

I feel the pollution is getting worse and whilst it seems appropriate to blame it on the mainland, Hong Kong needs to take responsibility also. The cheap taxi’s and other forms of transport are to blame in a conjected city with hardly any greenery in pedistrian areas. Walking around Central, where you are fenced in with skyscrapers and with traffic dominating means that pollution is being sucked up by people walking around.

The hint that things have become bad with pollution detectors popping around and news channels telling you what the pollution percentage would be over the next couple of days (BTW What is this comparable to, if there’s 100% pollution - what does that mean??!!)

So what can be done? Well, search me! For me it makes sense to promote a cleaner way of living, using vechicles less and perhaps even increasing taxi fares to put people off. I doubt that’ll work, but a government investment in land in prime locations in which trees and greenery could be placed - would help a bit. Perhaps each building rooftop could be lined with plants? Ah I don’t know…

Also, it seems pretty petty to launch a massive ad campaign to “cut out smoking in restaurants and in public areas” when the pollution from everyday living is more dangerous to the health.

    1. Force the power stations to clean up their act. You can see the pollutuion coming from Lamma.
    2. Require the bus and taxi companies tophase in LPG fuel.
    3. Ban private cars from city areas.
    4. Publish the name of the “polluter of the week”
    5. Hang all smokers!!

    Good suggestions.

Although with the recent Chinese Memorial Day yesterday which involves burning paper money, paper clothes etc., to those who have passed - I feel we’re on a losing side really…can’t change religion, even if it damages the environment.

To put this in perspective, I imagine Scandinavian countries and other European places must be feeling smug for cutting down on their Co2 emissions, only to read that China’s are increasing and HK is becoming more polluted.

Also HK is becoming famous for “City of Lights”, but the pollution caused from the daily fireworks and lightshow can’t be helping!

Ah, got this off my chest!
