Thought I’d do a short piece on Michael Jackson death, not just report this sensationalist story which everyone else is doing, but to look at another angle. I think I was more shocked about Heath Ledger’s death, but this story will go on and on and will be compared to Diana or Elvis.

We all know about his story which in brief went from Child Star, Superstar to a Bizarre Guy – but all the way through he’s been an intensely private man, so I’d expect any official Michael Jackson Death news we’ll hear will be carefully scripted and planned.

However, this doesn’t mean the media will follow Michael Jackson’s death with just a touch of sadness and I predict over the next few weeks, the stories will follow this pattern:

-	Sympathy. Everyone will feel sorry for the kids he left behind, his friends (probably Beyonce will issue a tearful statement) and family (who he didn’t see much). You’ll also see stars from the 80’s who you’ve never seen since that decade, come out and offer condolences.
-	Reflection. There will be clips galore of him in action, especially from his childhood. I bet Rockin’ Robin and A B C will be the most showcased clips.
-	Questions. Now the questions will be asked – how did it happen, was someone involved and so on.
-	Backlash. This is what the media is all about. They will delve into his character, his spending, his quirky ways and secrets which only have been “revealed” since after his death…terrible!

The truth was he cared what people thought of him, reflected in his attempt of his many comeback gigs over the years. The damage on his PR due to the child cases brought against him as well as being in huge debt wouldn’t have helped with his death. He was a recluse and cared about illnesses, so was ironic he died this way.

He was a great man who left a huge legacy and changed music forever. That’s all I have to say, now I’m going to go outside and bask in the sun whilst thinking romantic thoughts about my love.

I guess another thing is the lack of toothpicks. Over here, toothpicks are called “Cocktail Sticks” and usually can be found with a party sausage or a bit of cheese and pineapple on the end.

Talking of food, I wonder what all you Brit Expats stationed in HK will be eating for your Christmas meal? I’ll be tucking into roast turkey, parsnips, spuds with bisto, sprouts…can you get that at Park and Shop? ha ha ha

I watched a Taiwan “real-life” programmme yesterday which secretly films partners who cheat and ended up shocked by the out-come. I’ve watched this weekly program a few times and although I don’t understand anything they are saying, I get a pretty good idea as to what’s going on (i.e. viewing the on screen punch-ups when the partner confronts the cheating partner/lover/lover’s sister etc.,).

This episode involved the partner suspecting that his girlfriend was cheating on him and was avidly spying on her in a blacked out mini van with a tv crew by his side. It turns out she was actually seeing her ex-husband, which was a surprise for her boyfriend as he didn’t even think she was married!

To cut a long story short, they ended up following the couple who had driven off into the woods and then ended up losing them. All of a sudden they spot the car at the bottom of the hill, they race down to see that there’s a tube attached to the exhaust pipe which is then entering the window! The camera crew record the couple in the front seat of the car, motionless and apparently not breathing. The crew then records how the boyfriend tries to smash the window in a vain attempt to free the couple inside and then they use a hammer on the back window and drag the lifeless bodies out. From what I could tell they were both dead already by the time the boyfriend and tv crew arrived. I guess nothing could have been done to save them, but this takes “Reality TV” to a whole new level, oh lala!

Something a bit more light-hearted, I came across this program on Children’s CITV in England called Boohbah. Now forgive me if I’m wrong but doesn’t BoohBah mean Big Boobs in HK?!

I needed a change from my previous job in England. My background is in Fine Art and Design, whilst in Hong Kong I worked as Web Designer producing sites for other companies. At the moment I’m focusing on my own personal sites, so it’s rare I’ll start projects for other people – however if you have some interesting work available, feel free to contact me for a quotation.

Seems like a fuss is being kicked up by the Chinese-American community about an Adidas trainer which has created a supposedly stereotypical image of an Asian guy on the tonge of the latest shoe.
See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4895898.stm

Firstly, in what way does it offend Chinese? The designer never actually said the image was of an Asian person (or specifically Chinese in that matter), so why would Chinese people kick up a fuss about it? By them associating a goofy kid with slanty eyes and a pudding bowl haircut as being Chinese, they’re the ones who could be deemed racist.

This reminds me of the Golliwog image from Golden Shread marmalade, which has now been discontinued due to protest that the image was racist. I can understand how the name is racist and was changed to “Golly” back when I was a kid. When I was young, I used to love collecting the marmalade tokens and saving up to get the latest badge.
See http://www.ferris.edu/news/jimcrow/golliwog/ for further information on the demise of the Golly.

Surely in this day and age we aren’t so close minded to be shocked by a drawing which may or may not be a characture of a race of people.

I guess we should also say goodbye to the following logos also:

Genki Sushi

Milky Bar Kid

Came across a study that explains that Hong Kong Penises are the same size as Western Penises. Hmm this maybe hard to believe, was the study made by comparing HK Gweilo’s to HK Guys or just generally. For me, I’d like to blame the sun for shrinkage , but I’ll take their word for it.

The programmes that are on our screens over here range from 24, CSI to Queer Eye for The Straight Guy – which are pretty good. The thing I’m disappointed by is the Local News, more importantly the newscasters. I think TVB Pearl is the worst offender with their ugly gweillio presenters which makes me think the only reason they came to HK was that they were rejected in their home country and/or are related to the show producers…

I guess I expect a bit more from my programmes over here, especially where programmes are sponsored by the likes of Rolex or a fancy hotel.

I made my comments clear in a open comments forum about the BBC and see that they’ve published my views.

The most interesting are the TV ads. Whether it’s the obvious Public Service Adverts reminding you to cook your food properly to Face Whitening Creams. Whilst most guys are crazy about Joey (Jo Jo?), I’ve become more interested in Karen Mok – a lovely canto-singer/actress (I guess?) who is always on our screens advertising the likes of shampoo, toothpaste, bathwash and makeup.

It’s Typhoon Season and I’ve just spent the best part of 1 hour in our local supermarket “stocking up”. Of course like others, I left buying the supplies at the last minute so all I could get my hands on were a few oranges, milk, water, mustard plant and some mushrooms – wow, wondering what I can cook up with that. Looking at other baskets in the supermarket I could see they weren’t doing much better, funny thing was one guy had a basket full of Dorito Chips – not sure how long he’ll survive on those.

The real winners are the supermarkets. It’s the time of the year when they can put out their old stock, least popular items and “gasp” even increase the price, in the full knowledge that some sucker will buy it.

Looking at recent articles by bloggers in HK, there seems to be the conclusion that most native Hong Kong people and expatriates who live here are rude, obnoxious and tight?

So what makes people living in HK any different to those living in other countries? Is it the hectic lifestyle of working long hours, for little money (not for expatriates) and living in cramped conditions? Perhaps it’s somehow linked to the fluctuating weather, where HK can have humid conditions one moment and blazing typhoons the next.

Well for expats, I’m of the opinion that some lack social skills which may account for why they were expatriated in the first place! You need a certain level of education and intelligence to be an expatriate in Hong Kong, this doesn’t mean however that you are the most friendly guy/gal in the world. Then you have the expats who are just obnoxious using their wealth and class to look down on others, something which is frowned upon back in their home countries.

The environment that we live in is hectic and the society is one where people just want to make money and fast. Perhaps this is could effect a person’s social skills?

I’ve met more of my fair share of arseholes and also thru the medium of blogging (Conrad, George, Dave…) but this is what gives HK character and with out them, everyday life would be just plain boring…

On a similar subject has anyone noticed the logo on the local bus? It says FirstTv but the way it’s been designed it looks more like “ArseTv”. Perhaps this could be subliminally effecting HK people? I thought it was funny anyway.

When going into the lift and upto my apartment, I’ve become aware of the floor numbers game. There’s an unwritten rule that the higher the floor you are on, the more expensive it is and therefore the more money you have. This may or may not be true, there just seems to be a form of “smugness” going around when someone pushes a floor button number higher than yours.

We share our apartment block with quite a few Chinese Superstars ranging from actors to the ever annoying “Twins”.

Also on a side note does lift music exist in HK? I haven’t heard any since my arrival, perhaps there could be a market for it.

My gf was mistaken and thought she asked for a “Boobs Card” and looked down at her own set before giving the cashier a puzzled look. V funny.

Saw this on the local news that it’s No Air Conditioner Day today as the Environmentalists wanted to bring to attention the daily energy that is used to power the machines. The news showed a local school with kids participating in the special day, but they all looked hot and bothered and ended up complaining that they couldn’t concentrate on their work.

They decided to spend the whole day making fans to cool down. Problem is how much paper was used to create the fans? Surely this would have a greater effect on the environment. Nice idea though.
