So what sort of toys do kids in China buy? Most of the toys in the world come from China, so is interesting to know what the kids here like. Well, it mainly centers around Japanese animation and movies like Doramon or Ultraman, but there’s another programme which is huge and it’s Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf!

My son love it, although can’t see why. The show is on Chinese tv daily and mainly consists of two wolves trying to eat a flock or sheep and failing. A bit like Roadrunner and Coyote but a bit more violent. The female Wolf always hits her partner with a frying pan and the sheep find painful ways of fending off the wolves. For me it was fun for about 5 minutes, but after seeing one episode there’s no point in watching the other 300+!

Anyway, it’s not for me…it’s for the kids. Perhaps there will be a translated version and will hit Western airwaves in the near future!

I’m getting searches for Gong Li too, who as a personal preference is much more interesting to look at than Zhang Ziyi Pictures.

Chinese Actress Gong Li

Well since China’s Outrage is in the news, Gong Li was also in the press for becoming a Singapore Citizen. She’s been called a traitor as well as other things, even though she’s promoted China and Chinese films as an actress for over 20 years.

Now that she’s from Singapore (which her husband is from too), it means that she’s been excluded from the delegate list of the China Film Association (CFA). She’ll probably find she’s been excluded from other things too, as well as paying a higher rate of tax in China since she’s now a foreigner – similar to my wife who is Chinese and then gained French identity.

Things like this smack of double standards, since Jackie Chan who was born and lives in Hong Kong, is the elected vice-chairman of the CFA! I suppose no one can touch Jackie Chan since he’s so powerful.

Curse of the Golden Breasts

I saw the film Curse of the Golden Dragon which stars Gong Li and since it’s a Chinese language film and I don’t speak Chinese very well, I had to judge the film on the images only. All I can say is the director of the film must have an obsession with big breasts since all the women were well endowed with bursting cleavage and some nipslips, especially Gong Li herself!

Gong Li Video

I found a video of her briefly topless in the film “Miami Vice”:

I forgot to mention that Shanghai has many “all you can eat” restaurants with the selection of food ranging from hairy crab to sushi. The Chef cooks your selection infront you on a huge hot plate and found it amazing to watch these masters at work.

Anyway, on the most recent visit I got a bit drunk (as the booze was free also) and kept on resting my hand on the hot plate! I put my saki on it once as well and it bubbled like a bugger! I think if someone wanted to have this type of restaurant in England, they’d go out of business very quickly! There’s a huge drinking culture in England and would imagine that people only go to the Restaurant for the beer and combined with a hot plate infront of you, it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

Also reminds me of a story from a mate in Leeds. Whenever he walks past the window of his local pub, the landlord automatically pours him a pint – regardless if he was going to go in or not. He then feels obligated to go in and put it on his tab (which I’m told is now a 4 figure number!).

Anyway, I’ve just come back from the Nanning Outdoor Food Festival and had a great time. Loads of food on offer and free samples, so I guess if I ever was going to get diarrhea on this trip then now would be the time to get it.

I tried snails, sweet potato soup (really nice), barbaque meat, sweet cornbread with sticky rice, pork dumplings, sweetcorn on a stick, another sticky rice that looked like a dog turd, sweet pork on a stick and bamboo.

I also managed to get my picture taken whilst stuffing my face with cornbread. Three guys stood around me taking photos and was told that my photo will be in tomorrow’s three daily papers – hmmm, I’ll look out for it.

Back in 2004, whilst thinking of how to word this entry, I get the notion that if I lived in China full-time my blog would be so much more interesting. Hong Kong on the otherhand is very Westernised and there isn’t too much to write about except for the odd Comedy Shop Sign (i.e. Dick Hairdresser’s) and Annual Festivities. Anyway on with the entry…

I’m still in Guanghi having celebrated the CNY but having overeaten and perhaps having ate the wrong food – I ended up with food poisoning over a two day period and it was getting worse. A rickty ambulance with sirens blaring was called and I stumbled into the back – noticing that I drew a pretty big crowd on my exit!

I won’t bore you with the details but ended up with a shot in my ass, blood sample taken along with a poo stool. I was given this 4cm x 4cm plastic cup in which to make my “deposit” which I found pretty difficult to do, especially since I had to use a Chinese Toilet (I’ll write about my hatred for Chinese toilet’s another time, although in the mean time I’d like to question how old/disabled/pregnant women can use it…).

My white blood cell count were double the size of my red blood cells, so I got hooked up with a drip containing two bottles of saline solution and one bottle of glucose.

The hospital was clean, staff friendly and generally it was a pleasant experience in contrast to the situation I was in. I’m pretty much recovered now, ready for my trip back to HK.

In 2004, we went to a Chinese Wedding yesterday, great experience. There was about 200+ people in a banquet hall, most of which I think were family and we just ate and drank. We gave the married couple a red envelope which had 5 pounds from each of us, which should of covered the cost of food and drink anyway. We were sat real close to the bride and groom and I guess surprised the other people who were there.

Food ranged from duck, pork pieces, sticky rice, prawns, fried vegetables, cakes, soups – basically loads of stuff. Then the bride and groom came over, gave us each a sake and gave us each cheers. I think drinking 200+ sake’s, they ended up pretty legless! It was quite a noisy affair with Karaoke singers, people shouting around which I think was linked to the free beer/sake and there was even a fight.

Then it was all over in one hour! I was still hungry so ended up going out to eat dumplings and favourite sticky sweet sticky rice.

I didn’t manage to show up this year, but went last year to see what was going on. I remembered it was quite peaceful and as most people were carrying lighted candles, it looked beautiful to watch.

I was interested to read that in the weeks after news filtered through of the event in 1989, one million people took to the streets of Hong Kong in protest – the largest civil demonstration ever seen in the city with roughly one in six of the population joining the protest!

Chinese New Year is approaching and everyone is making a mad dash for sweets, red pants and big tubs of cooking oil?! Anyway back to the subject of Chinese sweets and I’m sad to say whilst Chinese food is some of the best I’ve ever tasted….Chinese really suck at making sweets! They are usually bland and flavours such as Sugar Cane and Medicine flavour don’t inspire me. The same goes for Chinese chocolate, bread (usually they add lots of sugar), biscuits and anything snack like…I suppose this is a secret of why Chinese don’t really put on weight compared to their fatty Western Counterparts.

I’m glad we did our Chinese New Year shopping we in advance as last time we left it to the last minute and the supermarket was jam packed.

Talking of jam-packed, here’s a nice video clip from Japan of the MTR subways.

Take a look at the photos here.

Well the “big day” finally came and went! We had only 2 days to prepare and it actually went pretty smoothly, I guess it’s a factor of having no nerves as we didn’t have time to be stressed or to think about what was going to happen during the Wedding Day.

So everything was a bit rushed around, we bought our clothes a day before and rings etc., It turn out alright though and we got a video recording being developed which recorded the whole day from when I wake up to the party at the end.

I didn’t know what the day was going to turn out like, but it started with me in a hotel room, waiting for partner to get ready. Then went to her father’s house to collect her in a personal car (got x6 arranged!). Then had to pay money to enter the house/room, then had to serve tea to her father. Then I was supposed to carry her down the stairs, but since we were on the 6th floor – it wasn’t really possible!

Then went to the hotel room and her Aunt and Uncle put some nuts and egg on the bed and changed the covers to red colour. Then, we took a tour around the city and then had lunch.

After this we prepared for the part and found that 160 people were attending (many family of partner’s father, who we never met). Anyway, we received small packets of money which is part of the tradition – so that was good!

Then we had a wedding type ceremony in front of everyone, had to stamp on some balloons and then exchange rings and then talk. This was something I couldn’t do in Chinese, but partner tried to translate. Then I had to sing a love song in Chinese, which was pretty difficult! But it was fun.

Then we sat down to eat and changed clothes. We didn’t have much time to eat as we had to say cheers to everyone with white wine. Then we offered tea to everyone and in exchange gave us some more money. It was a shame as the food looked really nice (sea food, pork cuts, chicken etc.,) but we never had time to sit down and enjoy it as we were up and about all the time.

After serving tea we had to wait near the exit doors and wait for everyone to leave and say thanks and give sweets to them.

The day was really long from 7am to 11pm, but was certainly an experience and went really well.
